Antimicrobial Resistance and Stewardship: Unpacking Key Issues & Insights

Context

The Tropical Health and Education Trust (THET) commissioned Ingentium to carry out an evaluation of the Commonwealth Partnerships for Antimicrobial Stewardship (CwPAMS) programme. CwPAMS is a health partnership between health institutions in the UK and four Commonwealth African countries (Ghana, Uganda, Tanzania and Zambia). This evaluation held between 2020-2023 aimed to assess the CwPAMS programme and ultimately aimed to see an increase in the rational use of antibiotics as well as the subsequent reduction in morbidity and mortality associated with antimicrobial resistance in 12 health partnerships across Ghana, Uganda, Tanzania and Zambia.

The Approach

Through qualitative and quantitative research methods, Ingentium collected data from documentary analysis, interviews and questionnaires. Ingentium also engaged with a number of stakeholders, including senior members of medical and NGO communities within Sub-Saharan Africa and the UK. The data collected was then evaluated and scored using a numerical criterion developed specifically for this evaluation. It was then used to determine which of the 12 health partnership projects achieved their set objectives.

A set of 3 overarching questions were posed to assess the improved extent of the antimicrobial stewardship, the value in participating in the CwPAMS project and possible scaling and action plans for antimicrobial stewardship.

Outcome and Impact

The findings and successes emerging from these evaluations were presented by the Ingentium team to key CwPAMS stakeholders during a THET Programme Talk. Alongside that, Ingentium collaborated closely with the client to disseminate the outcomes more broadly through the publication of a peer reviewed article, further showcasing the report’s contribution global health and the strengthening of health partnerships.
